Game - Brink

23/07/2012 09:54

6/10

Well where do I start, the immense hype and anticipation that surrounded this game made it out to be some holy icon of a lost saint of the order of cultist gamers, or something of similar meaning.

As this build up drew me in to its web of lies I did in fact pre-order this game. The day of arrival was the last day of exams, causing much longing to delve in to a good title. Visually Brink will stun you, it’s absolutely beautiful, but as you play a bit more of the game you start to see flaws which I'm surprised no one I know saw.

The blatant repetition in the missions felt samey after just three mission, which is a little too soon. Then if you are playing this game offline on any other setting than easy don't bother. Really don't bother. This game centres entirely around team work and all the classes working efficiently as a team. Don't get me wrong, the principles and ideas behind this in an online game are perfect but I don't think Brink truly captured that concept, they did give it a bloody good shot though.

Where was I, when you are trying to carry out a team work objective with bots this is the major flaw, the bots get bloody irritating, medic bots stand there and look at you, as though to say "O, you appear to be downed, well I have a revive in my hand here for you, but I'll just stand in view of you and look at you."

That just skims the surface of my dis-like of bots but that's a campfire tale into epic battles and long gone heroes. Also the idea of being able to unlock guns on completing challenges is a brilliant idea, save waiting till a stupidly high level to get decent guns. Again this I saw wasn't thought out properly, one of the challenges is to capture objectives, sounds easy enough, but the bots will NOT capture them, so this will leave you open to enemy fire whilst you complete them, and you expect some covering fire from your team. Don't be silly, it's like walking in to a warzone after insulting all of your squad, they couldn't care less if you die.

All in all this was a let-down, after all the hype it just couldn't live up to the name it had made for itself.
